Music for Your Wedding Liturgy
There is a wealth of beautiful liturgical music in the Catholic Church that can help those present at your wedding to pray and give thanks to God for your love. When choosing music for your wedding, consider the prayerfulness and beauty of your selections, as well as the participation of those gathered with you.
During a Catholic liturgy (Mass or ceremony), only sacred, liturgical music can be sung or played. Sacred music is that in which the text expresses praise to God, acknowledges our dependence upon God, and/or uses texts from the Bible. Liturgical songs are specifically written for the celebration of the liturgy. Some classical music is also appropriate.
However, other music may be done as a prelude, because we do allow secular music outside of the Mass, though it is not encouraged. Some popular music with a “spiritual theme” was not intended to be sung during the liturgy, and therefore may be more suitable outside of the liturgy. It is suggested that secular music is reserved for the reception.
The fees for the parish organist and cantor are included in your parish wedding fee ($150 for organist, $100 for cantor). Because the liturgy is intended to be sung, the role of the cantor is very important. The cantor proclaims the Responsorial Psalm, the Gospel Acclamation verse, and leads the singing for all other parts of the Liturgy. They can also sing beautiful, prayerful vocal solos during the prelude or as meditation. If you choose to have outside musicians or singers in addition to the organist and parish cantor, please discuss this with the music minister prior to engaging their services.
Please plan to meet with the parish organist to finalize the music for your wedding liturgy one to two months before the wedding. We look forward to helping you plan a beautiful wedding liturgy!
